2 and a half hours to install Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts??

filed under Gaming/PC by duniyadnd on October 9th, 2007 [blogs index]

You've got to be kidding me. I'm an avid fan of the Company of Heroes line of games, but when it takes 2 and a half hours to install a game, that's totally bogus.

First off, they check if you have the required specs on your machine, turns out, I don't have enough hard drive space, so I have to delete some stuff. No problem there, took about 15 minutes tops and I can't blame the installation for that. But when the installation starts, I enter in my key. Fair enough. Now it needs to uninstall my original Company of Heroes game. Understandable.. even though it was extremely slow in doing so. Then it begins installing.. Fine.. but that was taking a while too.

Once it installs, it looks for any update patches. Course I won't have the latest patch, I need to download it (130MB). No problem, should download in about 5-10 minutes tops. But since it's downloading from inside the installer, and it doesn't provide any option to find a mirror and any other link which might be faster, I'm stuck waiting for it to download (a good one hour).

Once it downloads, it goes out of the game to install the patch - amazing.

Finally, I go into Opposing Fronts only to find out that THQ/Relic server checks if I'm logged in. If I don't have an account, I HAVE to register (course I could just unplug my computer, but I don't feel I should do that to play the game). So I create an account and register and provide my key "again".

And now.. finally, I can play a game. They're lucky this is Company of Heroes, any other game, I just wouldn't bother recommending the game since it's a perfect turnoff.

Try deleting the downloaded patch.
They are located at
"C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USERNAME\My Documents\My Games\Company of Heroes\Patch"

Me too. I started the install yesterday, and installed four patches in a row. ONE BY ONE!!! I ran out of patience, and let it run trough the night. When i woke up today, I ran the game again, only to get yet another message to download a (the 5th...) patch. I'm still waiting for it to complete... Hopefully I won't get more patch-messages, but I don't know anymore.... I've spent over three hours in total intalling the game itself, and patching it... This isn't much fun, I'll tell you that...

I am now on my second day of installing Opposing Fronts...Rather than it downloading the patches one by one and then installing them all, it downloads 1, exits the game, installs the patch, which is incredibly slow..about 15 minutes...i restart the game...new patch required...cycle repeats...I'm now on my fourth or fifth patch download (It was so long ago i forget)....I'm only doing it now out of morbid curiousity to see what the game is like, but to be honest I think its been such a painfull experience, unless it is awsome, its probably going to get de-installed as a point of principle.
