Prices are a bit too much to bear!

filed under Gaming/PC by duniyadnd on November 23rd, 2007 [blogs index]

Today is Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving where the population in the US travel to stores around the world to do what people do best, shopping.

I was no different, scouring around to pick up the best deals. My ambition was not that great, just to walk around the store and see what's around and pick up what I thought was reasonably priced and something I would use. Naturally, I headed to the gaming section.

Now, I'm one of those guys who was heart broken that Microsoft announced that all Xbox 360 titles would be $59.99. The $10 premium meant that all "classic" titles are reduced to $29.99 instead of the usual $19.99 we got used to seeing for the Xbox and PS2 classic titles. I didn't know how much this would have affected me until today.

There was a drop in prices for a large number of titles. I wouldn't say a huge drop, at least for the tiles I was interested in. Call of Duty 4 dropped by about $12, but still close enough to the $50 mark (heck, add taxes, and it surpasses that). I could no longer feel that I was getting good deals at games during the most important shopping day of the year. Prices for these games has become so immense.

I wasn't the only guy who thought they were too high. There was a guy in one store right in front of me asking for CoD, and the store clerk points to part 4, and he said, no, an older one, he can't afford that. and that was only one of the many people who I heard that day saying that the games were too highly priced.

There used to be a time when games weren't that highly priced, when people could afford a game or two a month and move forward, but that day has long gone for folks like me who has more $$$ to spend on and save on with this impending recession that we keep hearing about.

What annoys me most about game pricing is the no-mans land in between newly released / full price, and greatly reduced after 1-2 years. Games in this age range tend to be very near full price as Henry says, but are worth very little second hand. So to play the big new games (with enough time to appreciate them) you take quite a hit, or in my case because I take too long to get around to finish games, it's worth more to keep them than trying to trade them in.

That's if you can sell your old games at all... digital downloads and online-activated games are near impossible to resell, but that's a moan for another time :)
